Starting out in South Carolina but ending up in where else, but the Boogie Down, came DJ Jazzy Jay. Jay was one of the original members of Afrika Bambaataa's Universal Zulu Nation starting out as a dnacer but ending up as the resident DJ. Jazzy Jay was also a meber of the group the Jazzy Five. Jay is the younger cousin of Kool DJ Red Alert.
In 1984 Jay along with Rick Rubin layed down the foundation of what would become the huge record label Def Jam Recordings. The first official release was the single "it's yours" by T. La Rock and Jazzy Jay. JAy later introduced Rick Rubin to Russell Simmons creating one of, if not the, most important partnerships in Rap/Hip Hop production.
Jay founded Jazzy Jay's Studion in the Bronx, releasing such artists as; Diamond D, Fat Joe, Brand Nubian, and A Tribe Called Quest.
Jay founded his own label called Strong City Records.
Jay has collected over 400,000 records and counting.
